This book provides a deep understanding of how small-scale fisheries contribute to the food, nutrition, and livelihoods of fishers in Malaysia. Through insights gained across its 17 chapters, the book enhances our understanding of the sector’s complexity by highlighting the interplay among socio-economic vulnerability, environmental degradation, governance and community resilience. Because sustainable small-scale fisheries are deeply shaped by equitable access to resources for income and food security, we hope this book will be a valuable tool for stakeholders and practitioners working to support sustainable fisheries management. Ultimately, this work aims to raise public awareness and inform policymakers of the urgent need to protect these valuable fisheries and the livelihood of the communities in Malaysia.

Small-scale fisheries are central to life along Peru’s coast, yet they remain largely overlooked in national and global narratives. While many people recognize Peru for its anchoveta industry, far less attention is given to the communities whose daily lives, knowledge systems, and local economies are shaped by artisanal fishing. This book offers a closer look into that world through the case of Lobitos, a fishing village on the northern coast of Peru. Structured around past, present, and future, the book traces how Lobitos came to be. The present centers on a recent oil spill, followed by a major storm, that pushed this remote fishing village to the brink – between giving up and rising up. Looking toward the future, the book brings forward the voices of children and fishers through newly formed youth-adult partnerships. These perspectives highlight concerns about environmental change, shifting aspirations, and the continuity of fishing as a way of life, while also pointing to new forms of collaboration and possibility.

This book is a collective effort that brings together the voices of researchers, fishing-community leaders, and key stakeholders to provide a comprehensive account of small-scale fisheries in Colombia.
Through a dialogue of knowledge spanning more than five decades of research, place-based experience, and policy implementation, the book examines the achievements, gaps, and challenges that shape the current landscape of artisanal fishing in the country. More than a diagnosis, this book seeks to define concrete pathways toward sustainability by presenting managements practices, integrated models, and real-world case studies that balance the ecological, economic, and institutional dimensions of fisheries governance. It is an urgent call to all actors involved in artisanal fishing in Colombia – scientists, fishing communities, policymakers, and civil society – to jointly shape a future in which artisanal fishing remains a source of life, identity, food security/sovereignty, and wellbeing for generations to come.

This book aims to enhance understanding of how various factors influence the economic and social well-being of artisanal fishers, their families, and their communities, while also documenting their coping strategies for sustaining livelihoods. The volume seeks to consolidate widely dispersed information on fishing activities and communities in Brazil, covering – but not limited to – topics such as management and regulation, socioeconomics, pollution, gender and public policies, and culture, and other relevant themes. The collection brings together 31 chapters that document diverse experiences in fishing territories across 15 Brazilian states, including 17 conservation units. Case studies reveal a striking difference in the perceived transformations and effectiveness of governance and socio-biodiversity protection mechanisms between territories located inside and outside conservation units.

Through a series of articles, it illustrates the local‑level challenges of this activity and showcases multiple opportunities to transform Ecuador’s artisanal fisheries – a key sector of Ecuadorian society that can be seen as a pillar of the economy, development, and resilience, and as a driver of sustainability and innovation. Revaluing and elevating the fundamental role of fishers as guardians of the sea, creators of value, producers of sustainable food, and agents of change who promote proper resource management – along with improving the working conditions of those involved in the sector and making visible the diversity of local knowledge – are essential steps toward achieving the sustainability and long‑term viability of artisanal fisheries.

Reading Small-Scale Fisheries: Essays on Human Experience in the Blue Transformation

In 2019, Svein Jentoft wrote ‘Life Above Water’, a book that brought to the fore the meaning and value of small-scale fisheries and why we should care about them. Svein’s second book ‘The Gift of Community: More Essays on Human Experiences of Small-Scale Fisheries’ (2023) places a sharp focus on communities and the intricate connections and embedded relationships between the fisheries and the community. His third book in the series, titled ‘Reading Small-Scale Fisheries: Essays on Human Experiences in the Blue Transformation’ (2025), reads like an autobiography, with Svein reflecting on his life experiences and the lessons he learned about small-scale fisheries over the years. These essays reveal how Svein brings wisdom from philosophers and big thinkers in social sciences into fisheries discourse, which helps broaden our understanding about small-scale fisheries and transform how we approach them in research, and in governance.
