Over the past decades, we have seen significant progress being done in advancing the knowledge about small-scale fisheries and pushing forward policies and interventions for improving small-scale fisheries viability and sustainability. This work is a result of numerous small-scale fisheries projects, conducted by individuals, research teams, and organizations that work in international, regional, national and local settings. The #5 World SSF Congress is an interactive platform to share knowledge, experiences and stories from this work, as well as to discuss the most pressing issues in small-scale fisheries and to co-develop solutions and actions for the future of the sector. The congress is hosted by the TBTI Global (tbtiglobal.net), a global research network aimed to elevate the profile of small-scale fisheries and address issues and concerns affecting their viability and sustainability, and its partners.

We encourage conversation and discussion about three forward looking themes: Just HarmonyYoung Future  Regenerative Wisdom. While the abstracts do not need to speak directly to the themes, we are asking the authors to provide a short description about how their presentation is contributing, or is related, to moving the discussion on one or more of the themes forward.

Submission can be in the form of individual paper presentations (short/long), Special Sessions, or ‘Science Café’. See below for details. To encourage exchange and interaction, there will only be a maximum of FIVE concurrent/parallel sessions at one time slot. Your work will thus receive very good exposure. But it also means a smaller number of papers being accepted. Please follow the instructions carefully and submit your abstract early to secure space in the congress program.

Frequently asked questions

What are the congress themes?

Does my abstract have to speak to one or more of the congress themes?

Your abstract does not need to speak directly to one of the three congress themes, but we are asking the authors to provide a short description about how their presentation/session is  contributing, or is related, to moving the discussion on one or more of the themes forward.

Can I submit more than one abstract as individual presentation?

The congress applies “one paper per person” rule to enable participation of as many attendees as possible. If you submit more than one abstract for individual presentation, either regular or short, only one of them will be accepted for inclusion in the program.

Can I submit an abstract for individual paper as well as an abstract for Special Session/Science Café?

The congress applies “one paper per person” rule to enable participation of as many attendees  as possible. In other word, each person can only present one paper, either as an individual presentation or as part of a Special Session. You can, however, serve as a chair/moderator of a Special Session or a host of a Science Café.

Submitting an abstract for individual paper does not prevent you from submitting additional abstract for Special Session or Science café. However, there is no guarantee that both your individual paper and your Special Session/Science Café presentation will be accepted.

Can a project be accepted for both Special Session and Science Café?

Projects can be accepted either as a Special Session or a Science Café (not both). At least TWO people need to be confirmed participants in order to host a Science Café. Thus, if you are not able to confirm SIX people for the Special Session when the abstract is submitted, we suggest that you select the Science Café format.

Can presenters join remotely, either to present individual paper or be part of a Special Session?

The congress is 'in-person' only and there is no remote presentations or hybrid sessions.

When will I hear about my submission?

The congress committee will review all submission and notify you by email by  October 15th. Once your abstract is accepted, you have to register for the congress by December 15th to secure space in the program.
